Every few years a dance craze sweeps the nation and becomes a viral sensation for all who like to move and groove. I first learned how to Dougie in 2010 from Cali Swag District. Before that, I was doing the Cha Cha Slide all the way to class. We can’t forget about the Cupid Shuffle, Macarena, Soulja Boy, and most recently Gangnam Style.
Now comes the new fad known as the Harlem Shake. The “Harlem Shake” song by Baauer is unrelated to the Harlem Shake dance. The Harlem shake dance, originally called the albee in Harlem, is a dance that started in 1981. The dance became mainstream in 2001 when G. Dep featured the Harlem shake in his music video “Let’s Get It”. Throw away everything you know about the original Harlem Shake because today’s version is quite different. When the beat drops, people go crazy.
Will you be doing the Harlem Shake? Can you teach someone how to Dougie?
