If you have ever seen Survivor or Bear Grylls on TV or heard legends of John Muir, then perhaps you have imagined yourself on a similar adventure. Living in Sacramento offers many opportunities to escape the urban environment and travel into the wilderness. But before you run off to that next awesome trip, here are a few quick planning and preparation tips.
1 Ingredients for an Awesome Trip
The ingredients required for planning an epic adventure are simple: research and creative vision. Ask yourself “What do I want to do with my upcoming vacation time?” Is there some place you want to go? Is there an outdoor activity that you have always wanted to try? Maybe you have always wanted to rock climb in Yosemite or trek on a multi-day back packing trip. Whatever it is that you have dreamed of doing, the only thing keeping you from accomplishing your goal is a lack of preparation.
2 Plan Early
The sooner you begin to set plans, the sooner you will be enjoying that perfect vacation. Try to make campsite reservations up to six months in advance to ensure that there will be space available. Some of the Yosemite camp sites fill up 6 months in advance. Keep in mind the estimated costs of the trip in terms of travel, lodging or permits, food and required time off from school or work.
Once you have set a goal, then it is time to prepare by gathering resources and training for the physical demands of the challenge. Give yourself at least a month or two of consistent similar physical activity before attempting to conquer your goal in nature. If you are planning to go backpacking, make sure to break in your boots with several shorter hikes and practice hiking with a fully weighted pack on. You might feel strange walking around your neighborhood or on a treadmill at a low speed and high incline while wearing a huge backpack, but it will make your life much easier when you set foot on that amazing journey.
4 Gear Up
When gearing up for your next mission, ensure that you have the proper gear available. Tents, backpacks, and sleeping bags are a must if you’re staying overnight. Closed toed shoes are necessary if you’re walking over some rough terrain. If you’re going somewhere cold, avoid cotton clothing, as it can soak in moisture and actually lower your total body temperature.
You’re a student, so you can also take advantage of your student discount by dropping by Peak Adventures (it works on their rental gear). If you’re missing an essential camping stove, backpack, or any other item, drop by and pick one up for the weekend.
Don’t hesitate to plan your next epic adventure!
